Hooks… How Many Do You Have?

Feb 8, 2010 by

Young Adult Ministry is all about hooks.  Hooks are the actions, people, programs, and connections that your young adult group has that causes people to find belonging, commitment, and dedication to your young adult ministry and your church.  It’s all about the hooks.  How many do you have?

There are some very important hooks that young adult leaders should try to incorporate into their young adult ministry.  Here are three of the top hooks that can make your young adult  ministry attract and retain the emerging adults living in your community.

1)      Relationships: This is the main “hook” in your young adult ministry.  There is no better hook for someone than for them to have a friend in the group.  Relationships are the most important hook that you have in your young adult ministry – and there is never any substitute for relationships and friendships.

2)      Compassionate Service: Another great hook is for the young adults in your ministry to engage in compassionate service to those in the community.  Serving others not only benefits those who you are serving, but it does great things for the group (and for people personally, as well).  It brings your group together.  It makes people feel empowered and wanted.  Compassionate service is a wonderful hook that brings your group together and gives people a place to belong.

3)      Consistent Communication: One of the best hooks in your young adult ministry is the communication that happens on a consistent basis.  Without consistent communication, people will slowly disengage.  If you want to establish hooks with the people (especially new-comers) in your young adult group, then you need to establish consistent forms of communication with the young adults in your group.

The goal of young adult leadership is connecting with God and connecting with others.  These are just several hooks that will help to attract and retain young adults so that you can share life together.

Good luck and God bless!
